Here’s a run down on what Eastside Barbell is all about. In the past it was really the name of where we trained, but since our move last year Eastside has become a fully fledged powerlifting and bench press club, housed in and affiliated directly to the Canterbury Sports Performance Center.
I ask Craig McGuigan to explain the focus and vision for the club in his own words….
Eastside Barbell Club (Eastside) is a not for profit organisation that is based at Canterbury Sports Performance Centre (CSPC). CSPC is the Company that owns and operates the gym. So the two organisations are closely related but they do operate separately.
Eastside has been primarily formed to promote 3 lift powerlifting and the bench press in the Canterbury region. Our objectives include providing members (and potential members) with a training facility that allows them to reach their potential. This includes providing the very best training equipment and creating an ideal training atmosphere. Above all, we want lifters to be training and mixing in the same venue. This atmosphere of belonging to a club and assisting others is an important part of our philosophy.
Our objectives also include growing competitor numbers in 3 lift powerlifting and the bench press. As part of this we are committed to hosting regular club lifts and seminars which are open to novice lifters.
At this stage Eastside is mainly a powerlifting club. As we grow we want to expand this to include other strength sports such as bodybuilding, strongman and mixed martial arts. In terms of membership we have no restrictions other than requiring members to have an interest in strength training. And you must train at CSPC.
